Virtual GP – Health advice at your fingertips
Many Insurers are now including virtual GP services within their products – this ranges from Group risk (Life/Income Protection and Critical Illness) to Medical Insurance and Cash plans. The new innovative digital healthcare service is designed to fit into the way we work and live today. From speaking to a GP on your way to work, getting a prescription delivered to your door or putting your mind at ease about something that’s been bothering you; they are here to look after you and your family, 365 days a year. The Medical Insurance providers had already led the way in previous years with their own virtual GP services – Vitality GP, Babylon, MyAVIVA Digital GP. It first began with Group Risk products with AIG Life, who included it within all their contracts as standard – called Smart health, mid last year and then following COVID19 the other Insurers began releasing their own version of the service within their products. It is important to note that not all include it as standard and it does vary in terms of the underlying services.
The underlying points of each service include booking an appointment with a GP appointment via telephone/Video call at a convenient time for you, along with the ability to have private prescriptions either mailed or sent directly to a local pharmacist for collection. Some of the providers can also allow referrals through the service from the GP to get you into a private consultant under your private medical insurance (If applicable). It is a really simple process and easy to do via the app on your smartphone or your tablet. You can select a date and time that is suitable for you to have an appointment, you can either do this via telephone or a video call. Find a time that works for you and book your consultation. Choose your doctor by their name (if you’ve seen them before), by the areas they specialise in or by gender if you’d specifically like to speak to a male or female doctor.
With the current ongoing situation within the UK and it getting harder to see your GP, virtual GP gives employees flexibility in booking an appointment. The uptake in the use of virtual GP’s has significantly increased since the COVID-19 pandemic.
