Simon Hurley-Smith voted into the 50 most Influential Corporate healthcare Magazine

Simons article from The 50 most Influential Corporate Healthcare Intermediaries

Simon began his career in the private medical insurance (PMI) sector with PPP healthcare. He joined PPP in 1992 as an account manager and left in 1999 to set up a specialist medical insurance brokerage called Health Matters (UK) Limited. As an account manager his role was to advise, develop and manage a portfolio of direct clients and a panel of intermediaries.

Health Matters has evolved “significantly” since inception
nearly 10 years ago, Simon says. The company’s original brief was
to exclusively specialise in broking PMI schemes within the SME
sector and it was, and still is, successful at providing this service
to its 420 clients.

As Health Matters evolved, so its clients requirements also changed. As a result, Simon says, the company found itself handling a wider variety of queries, which were beyond its capabilities and experiences at the time.

Health Matters now offers clients a variety of services ranging from insurance-based sales to counselling services and childcare vouchers.

As MANAGING DIRECTOR of a “significant” employee health benefits intermediary, Simon says his role is both “wide and varied”.

“Although I have the usual challenges of any company director managing a vibrant and growing business, I also have the rewards of working with an exceptional and committed team of individuals, which make ‘work’ enjoyable,” he says.

What one provider said: “Simon is an intermediary with outstanding customer relationships and in-depth industry knowledge. He engages with the insurer to ensure the best customer outcome and is clearly able to think outside the box to help his clients.”

The consolidation within the PMI broking sector means there will be “fewer quality small to medium sized specialist brokers” such as Health Matters left, Simon argues.

“As a smaller business we have to differentiate ourselves from our larger competitors and we do this by offering a consistent quality service to all our clients regardless of size,” he explains.
